NYC Theatrical Premiere, One Week Only!
*** Writer-Director Matthew Lessner and Special Guests in person Fri. 3/2 + Sat. 3/3 ***
"With a sturdy indie vibe and pacing that feels like 'Portlandia,' this film, a series of related sketches, maintains a laconic, deadpan tone that's a nice break from the usual high-volume comedy. "
- Daniel M. Gold, The New York TIMES
"The only Sundance [2011] film about cults that could actually have life as a cult film, The Woods has the greatest comic insight into why our current culture might inspire a search for meaning in the first place." - Karina Longworth, La WEEKLY
"Trippy, peppy, smart and strange! The cast is spirited, but Lessner is more invested in the textures of the filmmaking than in characters or plot. The film is a rush of color, sound, sly visual jokes, and exuberant energy..." - Shawn Levy, The Oregonian
"the Woods isn't for everyone, but I mean that as a compliment." - Michael Cera, star of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Writer-director Matthew Lessner's The Woods is a "psychedelic satire of hipster back-to-nature idealism" ( La Weekly ). The irreverent and outrageous comedy freak-out of Sundance and BAMcinemaFest makes its NYC theatrical premiere with a week-long run, March 2 - 8.
Disillusioned by the world's many problems, a group of young Americans move to the wilds of the Pacific Northwest with hopes of creating their own utopian society. Despite their revolutionary goals, the group is ill-prepared for their new life, bringing a wide assortment of consumer electronics, recreational vehicles and snack foods. After catastrophic events in the outside world sever their electricity and wi-fi, and their leader's once-inspiring rhetoric fails to hold them together, the group is forced to find a way to live in harmony with the natural world.
With saturated super-16 footage and a killer soundtrack featuring Dirty Projectors, Sun Araw, Lucky Dragons, and original compositions by Lydia Ainsworth, Lessner playfully subverts counterculture films of the '70s while questioning the shortcomings of his own apathetic generation.
90 minutes. In English. Presented in Blu-ray. Unrated. A Baxter Brothers/Cinemad Presents release.
