I bought my first "Southern Yankee" smoker in 2003, practiced all winter (using my neighbors as guinea pigs) and developed some pretty "okay" smoked meats. By summer of 2004, my family and I had a tent and were ready to do some fairs. We started at the Tuckerton Seaport, did a few Garvey Races and ended the season at the Toms River Rotary's Sail Fest in Island Heights. What a "blast" we had! We didn't make any $$, but we had a lot of fun and more importantly, we learned a lot. I "retired" from flying in early 2005 and during the summer of 2005 and 2006 we sold BBQ out in Right Field at the Lakewood BlueClaws and more importantly, in Dec 2005 we took over our first restaurant at 605A Rt.9 in forked River. In 2006 I started in the BBQ Competition Circuit with my grandson, Robbie as my team mate. We've really learned a lot from some of the best in the country. I'm also a KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) Certified Judge. It's been a tough struggle building up the restaurant and catering business, and teaching folks what real "smoked" barbeque is. Now, looking back, starting from a tent, to a two table (mostly takeout) restaurant, we were invited to take over the food service here at Friendly's Grill, and with the help of friends, family and especially Chef Marius, we're here with a totally new menu that includes Steaks, Salads, Soups, Appetizers, and of course, Our own Slowly Smoked BBQ and more.
