A greedy, weak man is seduced & trapped by a scheming woman amidst the dark shadows & Expressionist lighting of a '40 city. The movie throbs with intrigue, smolders with sexual tension and reeks of black cynicism. Stanwyck is as cold as she is hot, and both MacMurray and Robinson are great.
