Honoring Frank Lachmann, PhD Featuring discussants Anne Eisenstein, LCSW, Frances LaBarre, PhD, and Susan B. Sherman, DSW Award presenter: Michael Clifford, PhD Moderator: Rebecca Harrington, LCSW Frank Lachmann has been a major contributor to Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Self Psychology. In their joint work, Frank Lachmann and Beatrice Beebe enriched psychoanalysis by providing life-long principles of the organization of experience, derived from empirical infant studies, that offer new ways of understanding and potentially transforming the analyst-patient relationship. Dr. Lachmann has uniquely been able to draw on his love of music to inform the analytic process. Utilizing master classes taught by Isaac Stern, and the music of Richard Wagner and Igor Stravinsky, he discovered illustrations of cross-modal transfer and violations of expectations. As a writer, scholar, teacher, and supervisor, Frank Lachmann has continued to surpass our expectations with humor, complexity, a depth of tradition, and breadth of innovation. Lachmann is the author of over 100 publications and books written individually and collaboratively with Beatrice Beebe, Jim Fosshage, Joe Lichtenberg, and Bob Stolorow. He is the author of Transforming Aggression: Psychotherapy with the Difficult-to-Treat Patient and Transforming Narcissism: Reflections on Empathy, Humor, and Expectations . Dr Lachmann will present two papers: “Chills, Thrills, Goosebumps and Therapeutic Action,” a multi-media presentation on affective communication, and an autobiographical account, “How I Became Me.”
