Bang on a Can came into existence in a SoHo art gallery with a marathon festival of mostly unknown music. In the 25 years since then, it has grown into a veritable new-music institution, touted by the San Francisco Chronicle as “the country’s most important vehicle for contemporary music.” In celebration of Bang on a Can’s 25th anniversary—and its long history of performing here—Lincoln Center presents this landmark three-part evening. Bang on a Can: 25 Years opens with Tire Fire, a blend of ancient tradition and modern technology, and the signature piece of Gamelan Galak Tika. The irrepressible Asphalt Orchestra, an offshoot of Bang on a Can, will then perform the New York premiere of a new work by composer-drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, founder and primary force behind the progressive rock duo Ruins. The evening closes with Field Recordings, a major new eight-composer multimedia project that uses film, found sound, and archival audio and video to build a bridge between the seen and unseen, the here and the absent, the present and the past.
