*An event for those who aren't film intellectuals, we prefer those who have some, little, or no knowledge of film*
There seemed to be a conscious effort by filmmakers and critics in the 1960s and 1970s to openly discuss film form and aesthetics, as well as a push toward new ways of making cinema. This trend died out with the creation of the Hollywood Blockbuster, the turn to conservat ive politics that many countries took in the 1980s, and a rejection of classical film theory in the academy. Film form has remained a sorely neglected topic of conversation among filmmakers and critics in the last 30 years. The quest for new forms of cinematic expression and radical form has fallen by the wayside and, sadly, this seems to be the case even among the radical left. Whereas during the ‘60s and ‘70s filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Chantal Akerman, and others were consciously trying to create new and radical forms of cinema in order to express new and radical ideas, However, left films today have been relegated to boring, talking head documentaries or preaching to the choir melodramas. Shooting Wall contends that radical politics and thought needs a radical cinema. Radical form is the only way to express radical content. We will show clips from films, our own films, and open up to discussion about film, art, propaganda, etc.
