Beyond The Craft is an insider's presentation to doing what one needs to do to make a living creatively. It is extremely empowering (if not potentially life-transforming) bottom-line and nuts-and-bolts. Jim Jermanok draws upon his decade-long tenure as an Icm Agent and over 16 years as a working and accliaimed filmmaker to cover: distinguishing yourself; creating superb promotional materials; pitching yourself and your projects; understanding and succeeding with agents and managers; how to obtain agents and managers; how to find, approach, research and convince reps, talent buyers and other gatekeepers; working in film, television, theater, and new media; how to package yourself as a creative; current status of the entertainment/media industry; effective networking and an easy networking system; art of the schmooze; assembling a team whose sum is greater than its parts; importance of informational interviews; using your life history; making ends meet along the way, and social media marketing, among other topics. Jim Jermanok has spoken to dozens of audiences worldwide at colleges and universities, film festivals, theaters, and media/arts organizations on the 25 years of wisdom he's acquired about succeeding in the world of entertainment. For the first decade his career, Jim was employed as an Icm (International Creative Management) Agent where I represented Alan Arkin, John Guare, Helen Hayes, Arthur Miller, Shirley MacLaine, Dudley Moore, Henry Winkler and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, among others. There, he was privy to understanding how actors, writers, directors, and producers succeeded in the entertainment industry. What they have in common in contrast to the majority of creative folks who fail to make a living in their chosen creative field. Jim Jermanok did exactly what his clients advised and for the past 16 years he has had the good fortune to work as an award-winning writer, director and producer in independent film, theater, television and new media. In 2003, a full-length feature romantic comedy I wrote and produced, "Passionada," was released by The Samuel Goldwyn Company domestically and by Columbia Tri-Star internationally in over 150 countries. He was very fortunate to receive high praise from a number of prominent film critics, including "Two Thumbs Up!" from Ebert and Roper. In 2008, Jim produced "Em," an intense romantic drama by the gifted writer-director, Tony Barbieri ("The Magic of Marciano"). "Em" had it world premiere in June 2008 at the Seattle Intl. Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Film from among the more than 200 entries. It had a worldwide release late last year by Vanguard Cinema and SnagFilms. Jim is currently on the verge of finishing "Agganis," a feature documentary I directed about a renowned New England sports legend in the 1940s and 1950s and a prince of a man, Harry Agganis. Now Jim wants to pass along this wisdom to others in a compelling way with his workshop, Beyond The Craft: What You Need to Know to Make A Living Creatively. This workshop is intended to communicate exactly which qualities and tools successful creative professionals and students need to achieve prominence and a livable income. They utilize the distinct approach and philosophy Jim has cultivated over the years to make a living as a creative professional. They are also intended to help liberate creatives from solely depending on others, like agents, managers, casting directors, directors and producers.
